PostSubject: [Advanced] Mountain Mapping tutorial By MMB   [Advanced] Mountain Mapping tutorial By MMB Icon_minitimeFri Apr 04, 2008 1:43 pm

I will paste this very imporant tut here from OTfans Your ya guys to enjoy! Here it is:

[Advanced] Mountain Mapping tutorial By MMB 71799567le0ello

I
know this is wrong section, but I thought at least a few guys could see
it before it's moved to the tutorial section and forever lost. I ask
any moderator who sees this to keep it in the mapping-section where it
will help 95% more people than it would in the tutorial section.

You
have probably come here in order to learn mountain making from the
basics. And that's good, for else there'd be no point being here in the
first place. Yet, you're here, so let's dig in.

[SIZE="3"]The introduction.[/SIZE]

Making
mountains is counted as one of my favourites when mapping. The
extremely vast variety of possibilities makes every mountain a unique
work. Whenever you as mapper has learnt the basics and rules of
mountains a completely new world of possibilties will open (to be
drastical with alot of empathy). But, let's not waste more time on the
introduction, ay?

[SIZE="3"]The mountains' chapter[/SIZE]

Open
your map editor, for this is a step-by-step tutorial learning you
everything from the very beginning. Please notice, that alot of IDs
will be written and in order to smoothly find these, you may just cilck
the letter 'J' and then write the ID to jump to it. And since this is
just a tutorial focusing on mountains, I have already began doing the
ground and nature. This is, for example of course, an ideal starting
point.

And
from here your work is about to begin. First of all, the shape is what
is supposed to be settled. There's more than one way of deciding the
shape, it's your imagination and creativity which sets limits for it,
but this is my way of doing it.

Self-explanitary, a foundation (in this case consisting of the mountain walls again) is built around the caves edges.
[Advanced] Mountain Mapping tutorial By MMB Caveshapedonekx3

Thereafter,
to complete the foundation, we will have to fill the mountain up. This
might be a little tricky in the beginning, but you will soon discover
yourself used to this tool.

Next, comes a little tricky part - not only to do, but also to explain. I call these blunt walls,
and it's mostly used for making the mountains look uneven and natural.
There's quite many items used for this purpose, but I am only going to
use and explain the normal ones in this chapter. You will absolutely be
able to make perfect mountains without the knowledge of how the others
work, but if you're interested I have written them in the advanced chapter.
So, we'll only focus on the 12 most important ones in this chapter. These are the blunt walls used:

Now let's imagine we have a mountain shaped like this:

This is how the blunt walls will go:

And this is how it will look with them applied to the mountain:
[Advanced] Mountain Mapping tutorial By MMB Imagine3yd3

This
is extremely tricky, and it will require alot of training and
experimenting until you know it by heart. I can't come up with a better
way of explaining how they work, so that's unfortunately all there was
about blunt walls. So now, let's add them to the real mountain.

[Advanced] Mountain Mapping tutorial By MMB Bluntwallsdonehi9

Okey, let's focus on that cave now. I will apply a few items at the same time now.
First of all, we'll need a ramp leading up to floor 2, an entrance "archway" and a few other details.

Cave, step 1:

Cave, step 2:

Ramps

Cave, step 3.

It's time to put the last touch on the cave. The details.

Now
that the first floor is done, I suggest we proceed to the next floor.
Read the following post for the continued tutorial.[/QUOTE]

[QUOTE=Mannen med brillorna;716066]Continued tutorial:

So, this is the finished first floor:
[Advanced] Mountain Mapping tutorial By MMB Flooronedonecn7

Now, let us proceed to floor 2.
Now that you've learnt how to make the foundation, you'll see that almost the same method is used for the floor above. As you may notice at the red '1', there's a few yellow dots in the middle of the mountain. These won't be visible ingame, and they will send the player who walks on it downstairs into the ramp. I bet you have walked a ramp before, and using things this way will simply make it happen that way. Without these, players will not be able to walk down the ramps.

[Advanced] Mountain Mapping tutorial By MMB Floor2foundationij3

Thereafter, we'll simply apply the secondary blunt walls. Remember, that only 4 walls are used here, and sometimes other walls too, exactly as in caves. As you can see at the '1's I have placed normal blunt walls as decorative unevenness.

[Advanced] Mountain Mapping tutorial By MMB Secondfloorbluntsai6

Hereby, something which I call mountain borders are applied.

[Advanced] Mountain Mapping tutorial By MMB Mountainbordersyc2

What will happen next, is the addition of nature and some borders. For example, the blunt borders will be put at the bottom of the mountain. Also, either blunt borders or mountain borders may be put around the hole leading down to the ramp.

[Advanced] Mountain Mapping tutorial By MMB Rampsecondfloorae5

Now, nature is added. This consists of the grass spots, different types of stones, dead trees and similar, but not stalagmites. Logically, they can only be created by nature inside caves and similar. Also, for greater variation, please look in the advanced chapter.
This is quite easy, and I suppose you won't need a detailed essay of how to do it. However, this is the result of the second floor:

[Advanced] Mountain Mapping tutorial By MMB Auploadzea1

And now when we're at the third floor, we'll notice that we have already learnt everything needed.
Simply add the foundation, containing, in this case, of the rock soil. Thereafter add the mountain borders and lastly the nature, consisting of rocks, dead trees and other similar items.

This is the final production, and I hope you have learnt alot. In the next chapter, you may read about how to create ice and snow mountains and in the final chapter you may learn about a little more advanced things.

It is a great tutorial^^ for beginners, but maybe you could say what kind of tutorial it is in the title next time. Example: A mountain tutorial, cave tutorial, How-to-start your pc tutorial..

EDIT::
This tut is great, but I don't think it is for advanced players, am I wrong? how-to map a mountain is more basics
